Winter Storm Disrupts Midwest Travel, Causes Chaos on Thanksgiving Weekend
A powerful winter storm has caused widespread travel disruptions across the Midwest, particularly on one of the busiest travel days of the year: Thanksgiving weekend. The storm has brought heavy snowfall and strong winds to the region, with some areas recording over a foot of snow.
One of the most notable incidents occurred on Interstate 78 in Indiana, where a 45-car pile-up involving commercial and passenger vehicles took place. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported, but the Indiana State Police advised residents to stay home if possible and drive safely if they must travel. The interstate was shut down for approximately six hours to allow for cleanup.
In Iowa, a Delta Air Lines flight skidded off the runway at Des Moines International Airport due to icy conditions. The flight, Delta 5087, was taxiing onto the taxiway when it lost traction. All passengers were safely deplaned and taken to the terminal, and no injuries were reported. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident.
The storm's impact extended beyond the Midwest, with rain and snow expected to shift into the eastern third of the country by Sunday morning. The interior Northeast, northern New England, and the Appalachian Mountains are particularly at risk, with winter alerts in place for 2 to 6 inches of snowfall. On the East Coast, a cold rain is expected from mid-morning to early evening, affecting cities like Cleveland, Buffalo, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Charlotte, and Atlanta.
The storm has already caused significant travel disruptions, with over 1,600 flights delayed and 488 canceled as of Sunday. Chicago O'Hare International Airport has been particularly affected, with over 200 cancellations and 144 delays. Travelers are facing long lines and delays, with some flights being canceled multiple times, causing frustration and inconvenience.
One such example is the story of sisters Rima and Jasmin Eid, whose flight from Chicago to Miami was delayed three times on Saturday. They were attempting to surprise their mother with a cruise for her birthday but faced significant delays due to the storm. The airline's refusal to accommodate changes for basic economy passengers added to their frustration.
As the storm continues to impact travel and weather conditions remain hazardous, residents and travelers are urged to exercise caution and follow the advice of local authorities and weather services.
