Travelers, beware! The TSA is about to hit you with a hefty fee if you're not prepared. Starting February 1, 2026, the Transportation Security Administration will charge a whopping $45 to travelers who arrive at airport checkpoints without a Real ID or approved alternative. But here's where it gets controversial—this fee is more than double what was initially proposed.
The TSA is doubling down on its Real ID requirements, which were enforced earlier this year. If you're one of the few travelers without a Real ID-compliant driver's license or an alternative like a passport, Global Entry card, or military ID, you'll be hit with this new charge. And if you forget your ID at home or lose it before your trip, you'll also be paying up.
The agency justifies the fee by citing the need for additional time and technology to verify the identity of travelers without valid IDs. They've introduced a program called 'Confirm ID' for this purpose, and the $45 fee is said to cover the associated costs.
Here's how it works: travelers without an acceptable ID can prepay on the federal Pay.gov website or through a link on TSA.gov. With the receipt, they can proceed through airport security as usual. Those who don't prepay and show up without a valid ID will have to exit the line, register, and pay for their security verification, which could take up to 30 minutes.
The $45 fee grants travelers 10 days of access to TSA checkpoints, so it's a one-time cost for short trips. But beware—registering for Confirm ID doesn't guarantee a successful screening. If the TSA can't verify your identity, you might not be allowed to fly, and the fee is nonrefundable.
While the TSA assures that most travelers won't be affected, frequent flyers should take note. If you're prone to forgetting your ID or are worried about losing it during your travels, this new fee could catch you off guard. And it's just another expense added to the growing list of airline fees.
