Imagine this: you're a student, ready to head home after a long day at Collège catholique Samuel-Genest, only to find yourself unexpectedly stranded in a parking lot! That's exactly what happened to more than three dozen students last Friday, a situation that has raised serious concerns about school transportation safety in east Ottawa.
The incident unfolded near the St. Laurent Shopping Centre when the school bus driver, instead of taking the students to their homes in the Vanier neighbourhood, drove back to the bus depot on Coventry Road and left the children on the bus. Can you believe it? A driver abandoning their young passengers!
Fortunately, the alarm was raised when either a student or a parent contacted the Ottawa police. According to Patrick Pharand, the director of the Consortium de transport scolaire d'Ottawa (CTSO), approximately 40 students were on board when this bewildering event occurred around 2:45 p.m.
But here's where it gets reassuring: Pharand assured that the students were in good hands. The company's regional manager and a CTSO staff member were promptly on the scene. While some parents opted to pick up their children, a replacement bus driver was arranged to ensure that any remaining students were safely transported to their designated stops. The CTSO was also in communication with parents throughout the ordeal.
As for the driver in question, Pharand stated unequivocally, "The driver won't be driving a school bus [ever] again." This strong stance sends a clear message about the seriousness of the situation.
Collège catholique Samuel-Genest, a Grade 7-12 institution under the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est, is now dealing with the aftermath, and the Ottawa Police Service is actively investigating the matter.
