A Tragic Loss: Nova Scotia Community Gathers to Support the Family of 13-Year-Old Boy Killed in Dog Attack
The peaceful town of Shelburne, Nova Scotia, has been shaken by a devastating incident that has left the entire community reeling. A 13-year-old boy, Drew Nickerson, was tragically killed in a dog attack while riding his bicycle on the evening of January 3rd. The incident has sparked a wave of support and compassion from the community, with many coming together to offer their condolences and assistance to Drew's family.
The attack occurred when Drew was riding his bicycle past a property on Upper Sandy Cove Road in Welshtown, Nova Scotia. Three large-breed dogs, identified as two Cane Corsos and a Rottweiler, mauled the boy. Despite being airlifted to a hospital in Halifax, Drew tragically passed away from his injuries.
The dogs involved in the attack were euthanized by a veterinarian the day after the incident, and testing is underway for rabies and other factors. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have been working diligently to investigate the incident, canvassing the area, collecting video footage, and interviewing witnesses and people who knew the dogs.
The victim, Drew Nickerson, was a beloved member of the community. He was a Grade 8 student at Shelburne Regional High School and was known for his bright smile, kindness, and sense of humor. He loved outdoor activities like swimming and riding horses and was always on his bicycle.
The community has rallied around Drew's family, with online fundraisers and donations pouring in to support them. A GoFundMe fundraiser organized by a close family friend, Trish Harris, has raised nearly $60,000 for Drew's mother, Dawn Schnare Nickerson. The local fishing community and seafood companies have also donated items and fresh lobster for a raffle in support of Drew's mother.
The incident has been described as "extremely distressing" for everyone involved, including emergency responders, nurses, and the community at large. The Tri-County Regional Centre for Education (TCRCE) has offered counseling and support to school staff and students, recognizing the impact of the loss across the schools and broader communities.
As the investigation continues, the community remains focused on supporting Drew's loved ones and friends. The RCMP has asked anyone with information to contact them, and the community continues to come together to honor Drew's memory and provide comfort to his family during this difficult time.
