The North Norfolk Railway is gearing up for a special event as a 105-year-old steam engine, the Great North Railway Class N2 1744, is set to return to service after a major engine overhaul. This overhaul, costing nearly £800,000, has brought the engine back to life, ready to haul trains once again. What makes this locomotive truly remarkable is its connection to the legendary Sir Nigel Gresley, who designed iconic engines like the Flying Scotsman and Mallard. As the oldest surviving locomotive from Gresley's designs, No. 1744 has a rich history dating back to 1921 when it entered service, pulling suburban trains from London King's Cross and Moorgate. The engine's journey includes a retirement in 1962 and a subsequent return to regular service at the North Norfolk Railway, where it remained until 2018 when the overhaul began. The project faced numerous challenges, including delays caused by the pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and unexpected repair needs, but the dedicated team at the North Norfolk Railway played a crucial role in its reassembly, testing, and painting. The overhaul's completion marks a significant milestone, and the engine will be celebrated during the Golden Years event, which takes place from July 18th to 19th. This event not only showcases the engine's return but also pays homage to the 1960s to 1980s when the railway was saved, reopened, and extended, shaping the beloved railway we know today. The North Norfolk Railway's general manager, Graham Hukins, expressed his delight in the engine's return, highlighting the trust placed in their team by the Gresley Society, the owners of the N2. The engine will be dressed in its original GNR green livery and will haul special trains for guests and society members, offering a unique experience for railway enthusiasts. The Golden Years weekend promises a vibrant atmosphere with five locomotives in operation, classic vehicle displays, live music, and a rededication ceremony at Sheringham Station, marking the engine's official return to service. This event is a testament to the preservation of railway history and the dedication of those who strive to keep these timeless machines alive.
