Lakers vs Mavs: Anthony Davis Returns to LA, but Who Stole the Show? (2025)

A big return doesn't always mean a big night — and Anthony Davis learned that the hard way. His long-awaited comeback to Los Angeles should have been a triumphant moment, but here's where it gets controversial: the spotlight drifted somewhere else almost immediately.

Anthony Davis stepped onto the court for the first time in nearly a month, ready to reintroduce himself after being sidelined with a left calf strain since October 29. His former coach, JJ Redick, even promised before tipoff that Davis would get the "proper level of attention" in this highly anticipated return against his old team, the Los Angeles Lakers. And he did — but not the kind he hoped for.

From the very first possession, the Lakers made their intentions clear. As soon as Davis touched the ball, a second defender swarmed him, forcing him into a night of tough reads and quick decisions. Although Davis put up a respectable line — 12 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 blocks on 6-of-10 shooting — he surprisingly never took a single free throw. His playing time crept just past the preset limit, finishing at 28 minutes in the Mavericks’ 129-119 loss.

Davis didn’t sound frustrated afterward, but he certainly acknowledged the pressure: “Every time I caught the ball, I’d turn and see two guys right in my face. I just tried to make the right play. The rhythm will come.”

And this is the part most people miss… Lakers fans still embraced Davis warmly. During pregame introductions, the crowd erupted for him — his first game at Crypto.com Arena since the earth-shaking February 2 trade that sent Luka Doncic to L.A. and Davis to Dallas.

But Luka wasn’t about to let nostalgia dull his shine. In a performance that’s almost routine for him now, Doncic dropped 35 points and 11 assists, reminding everyone why the blockbuster trade was so shocking in the first place.

Yet even Doncic wasn’t the story of the night.

Austin Reaves stole the show.

Reaves delivered a stunning 38 points on an absurdly efficient 12-of-15 shooting. After the game, he traded jerseys with Davis — a huge moment for Reaves, who credited Davis with helping shape his career. “He’s one of the best players ever,” Reaves said. “I don’t know why he wanted my jersey, but it means a lot. AD believed in me from day one.”

But here’s where the drama ramps up: Davis’ time in Dallas has been anything but smooth. Injuries have kept him to just 15 games (plus a couple play-in appearances) since his arrival — a stretch turbulent enough to contribute to the firing of Mavericks GM Nico Harrison earlier this month.

And the cautious approach continues. Davis will sit out Saturday’s game against the Clippers as the team keeps him on a conservative return program.

In fact, Davis revealed he felt ready weeks ago. His personal medical team had cleared him to return against the Washington Wizards. But when Dallas’ director of health and performance, Johann Bilsborough, raised concerns, team governor Patrick Dumont intervened. Davis wasn’t allowed to play until the data showed his calf was no longer at risk of reinjury or a catastrophic related issue.

Meanwhile, the Mavericks spiraled to the bottom of the Western Conference standings. At 5-15, frustration is building.

“When you’re watching close games from the bench, it eats at you,” Davis admitted. “As a leader, you want to be out there battling with your team. Now I finally get the chance again.”

But here’s the real question: With the Mavericks sinking and Davis still working his way back, can this partnership ever become what Dallas hoped for? Or will the blockbuster trade that shook the league end up being remembered as a gamble gone wrong?

What do you think — was the Lakers–Mavs trade a mistake, or is it too early to judge? And does Reaves’ breakout performance hint at an even bigger role for him moving forward? Drop your thoughts below — especially if you disagree!
