Burnaby School District Feedback Opportunity: Proposed Calendar 2026-2029 (2026)

Attention, Burnaby residents! We have an exciting opportunity to shape the future of our school calendar. The Burnaby School District is seeking your valuable input on the proposed three-year calendar, covering the academic years 2026-2029.

But here's where it gets interesting: this calendar is not just about dates and breaks. It's a chance to influence how our schools operate and ensure they meet the needs of our community.

Let's dive into the details and uncover why this proposal is so important.

The proposed calendar aligns with most Metro Vancouver school districts, ensuring a consistent approach across the region. This alignment is crucial for families with children in different districts, providing a unified schedule.

Since 2014, the Burnaby School District has operated with five school closure days. These closure days are strategically placed to minimize disruption, and the lost instructional time is made up by extending other school days.

For the 2026-27 and 2028-29 school years, Good Friday, a statutory holiday, falls within the typical spring break period. To maintain consistency, one of the school closure days has been shifted to the Friday before winter break.

Professional Development Days are an essential part of our teachers' growth and improvement. Each school will choose two of these days over the course of the year, totaling six, including district-wide days. These days are carefully selected and published in the spring, allowing for adequate planning.

And this is the part most people miss: despite these adjustments, all Burnaby Schools consistently meet the required hours of instruction each year. This ensures our students receive the education they deserve.

If you have any feedback or thoughts on this proposed calendar, we encourage you to share them. Your voice matters! Send your insights to calendar@burnabyschools.ca.

Remember, this is your chance to be part of the decision-making process. Don't miss out on this opportunity to shape the future of Burnaby's education system.
